Running Update

So last night my running partner called me and told me she will not be doing the half-marathon with me.

I have to admit, I was both a little bummed and a little relieved when she called. I have come to the realization that I will have to walk most of the race, and I've been trying to be ok with that. My biggest issue has been sticking with the training schedule. I work until almost 6pm, then I come home and eat dinner, then I need a few hours to let the food settle before I run. This means that by the time I run, it's late and I'm tired. Getting myself to run 50 minutes like it says on the training schedule is difficult.

My training partner said she was also struggling with the training, and that she was behind where she needed to be as well. She thought she would be more disappointed of she went through with the race and did badly than if she put it off to a time when she could train properly. I understand how she feels; running 1/4 of this race is not what I went into this thinking I would be able to do.

So now I have a big decision to make. Do I try to continue training by myself, which is a lot more difficult, and try to finish as much as I can of the race? Or do I maybe do a 5k or 10k instead and try again next year when I have more time and energy to put into training? I want my first half marathon to feel like a success and right now I'm worried I won't feel that way if I walk most of it.

This is a tough decision for me. What do you think?

  1. I think you should keep continue training by yourself! :) There will always be things coming up, every year, and you will never have as much time and energy to put in the training as you would like. Just do your very best, and you'll be glad you did it. :)

  2. I would put the marathon off. Slow going is best. And you will enjoy it more which is half the benefit of running anyway. It isn't a failure it is 'a reassessment'. :)

I love to fellowship with others and hear what they have to say. I would ask, however, that you be mindful of what you write and try to be uplifting and respectful. Thank you for sharing!
